When we consider biodiversity, we often envision thriving ecosystems filled with diverse life forms that enhance resilience and adaptability (Naeem et al., 2016). Similarly, as universities strive for inclusivity, embracing neurodiversity can lead to more welcoming educational environments for all students (Hamilton & Petty, 2023). The neurodiversity paradigm shifts our focus from a deficit-based understanding of cognitive differences—like ADHD, autism, and dyslexia—to recognizing these differences as natural variations that enrich our academic communities (Hamilton & Petty, 2023).

What is Biodiversity?

Biodiversity refers to the vast variety of life on Earth, which helps ecosystems remain robust and adaptable (Naeem et al., 2016). In a similar vein, neurodiversity emphasizes the value of cognitive differences among students, encouraging educational institutions to view these variations as assets that enhance the learning environment (Hamilton & Petty, 2023).

Supporting neurodivergent students through tailored educational frameworks not only nurtures their strengths but also invites diverse perspectives into academic discussions (Hamilton & Petty, 2023). By adopting compassionate pedagogy and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, universities can dismantle the barriers that neurodivergent students often encounter (Hamilton & Petty, 2023). This proactive approach allows institutions to meet the unique needs of all learners, fostering an environment where cognitive diversity is recognized and celebrated (Hamilton & Petty, 2023).
